NEW JERSEY, July 8, 2002: The following is adapted from the NetAid website, an not-for-profit organization that links talent with need to help end world poverty. A volunteer in Germany translates documents for an organization serving youth in Africa. A man in Nigeria writes articles and a case study for an organization in the U.S. addressing poverty in West Africa. A woman in the United Kingdom concerned about children and poverty creates a web site for an organization in Sri Lanka. These are just three of thousands of NetAid Online Volunteers sharing their time and expertise to help organizations that address issues and conditions in the developing world. These volunteers help without having to leave their homes. They volunteer on weekends, in the evenings, on their lunch break, or whenever their schedules permit. They volunteer from home computers, work computers, or computers in public access centers. Since early 2000, NetAid, through a service managed by the United Nations Volunteers programme, has brought Online Volunteers and organizations in developing countries together through the largest database of online volunteering opportunities anywhere in the world. The NetAid mission is to connect people to each other and to the projects, organizations and ideas that are making a real difference in the lives of the extremely poor around the world. In September 2000 world leaders committed themselves to cutting poverty in half by2015. NetAid brings people together in ways that will help achieve this goal. NetAid matches those that want to help with those that need support: People who would like to "do more" to support the poor in developing countries, with excellent groups and projects throughout the developing world, With methods that are sustainable and will produce measurable results. NetAid acheives this through partnerships: Rather than re-invent the wheel, NetAid works through a global network of partners, including the UN, which has offices throughout the developing world. NetAid also builds direct connections: they make the abstract concrete byconnecting people directly to the projects and organizations they support. The Internet is their key tool. NetAid lets people know how close they are to real progress, and the difference a volunteer's commitment would make to the world's poorest families and children. NetAid believes in: Innovation: Finding new and better ways of doing the work, including through the innovative use of technology. Results: Seeking measurable, concrete and effective outcomes. Transparency, Accountability and Accessibility: Using resources wisely, being open to scrutiny and being accessible to all. Their flagship programs include: NetAid World Schoolhouse: Connects people and organizations to projects that are putting more of the world's children into school. Opportunities to learn, donate and sponsor projects. NetAid Online Volunteering: Connects telecommuting volunteers to poverty fighting organizations around the world. Opportunities to do volunteer research, writing, programming, networking and other activities, from home, school or the office.
